A SIMPLE CONVO WITH MATT JOHNSON FROM JAMIROQUAI
by Pulp Mag
·
Matt Johnson, a renowned keyboard player and songwriter from Jamiroquai join the Pulp team for a quick dive into a few of his experiences as an artist. Here’s a quick talk with the legend himself.
PULP : What would the menu look like for your "perfect breakfast?"
MATT : I usually skip breakfast in favor of fasting but I guess if I do eat it I would love scrambled eggs made with lots of butter on brown-bread toast! Maybe some bacon on the side!
PULP : It might be hard to pin-point the "best" but what are some of your top jazz albums?
MATT : Still Life Talking by the Pat Metheny group is a big inspiration for me, I love Lyle Mays' playing.
MATT : Also, Kind of Blue and Tutu by Miles Davis. Thrust and Sunlight by Herbie Hancock, I try to play funk like him sometimes. Heavy Weather by Weather Report.
PULP : You've been privileged as an artist to go on your own tour, the dream of many. Any out-of-the-box tour stories you could share?
MATT : We once played at a Yacht club for the super rich in Monaco to a very boring audience that were eating their £500 dinners whilst watching us perform. There were kids there too. All of a sudden this lady, maybe around 40 years old came on stage and started dancing in a very crazy way with a fur coat on. Suddenly she dropped the coat and was stark naked, she was bending over and nothing was left to the imagination. We found it super hilarious although some kids there may have been scarred for life!!
PULP: What's been your favorite gig to date?
MATT : It's hard to name one but playing in the open air in Rio De Janeiro to 130,000 people was one big highlight. Stevie Wonder came on after us and played for 3 glorious hours.
PULP: Worst gig?
MATT : Playing on a cruise ship from Gothenburg to Helsinki every day for a month, working for an Elvis impersonator! Everyone just came on the boat to buy cheap alcohol so they were constantly hammered! After a couple of weeks on that boat, so were we!
PULP: Assuming the reader of this article is a young artist, any words of advice for someone trying to pave their own path in this world?
MATT : Just get out and play any chance you can, no gig is too low, it's all experience and sooner or later if you are good you will meet someone at one of those gigs who will give you an opportunity to do a better gig. Also always give 100% percent on stage even if there's just one man and a dog.
PULP: Are there any future collaborations that you're excited about?
MATT : Only with my fellow band members, excited to make another record with them!
PULP: If you were commissioned to write a soundtrack, which genre would you want the movie to be?
MATT : Well I really love sci-fi and space themed stuff so that would be awesome.
PULP: When you need a boost, what are some songs that get you motivated?
MATT : Secret Rendevouz by Rene and Angela, Straight Outta Compton by NWA, All Night Long by Dexter Wansel. Come with Me by Tania Maria, Once you get Started by Rufus.
Out of all 7 billion people in this world, who's your favorite?
My wife Tanya. We are a couple of hermits and spend all our time together, she also collaborates with me on music as she has a heavenly voice!
